Miyashiro scholarship deadline is March 31
The Jack and Otome Miyashiro Scholarship is available to a graduating public high school student planning to attend a two- or four-year institution, as an incoming freshman in fall 2013. The $2,000 scholarship, sponsored by the family of Otome and the late Jack Miyashiro, longtime members of Hui Okinawa and founders of Jack’s Tours, is administered by Hui Okinawa.
In addition to being a Hawaii public school graduate, the applicant or his or her parent or legal guardian must be a current resident of Hawaii County. Application forms are available through high school counselor’s offices.

AlohaCare announces children’s art contest
AlohaCare is accepting entries for its 11th annual art contest. Children, ages 4 to 12, are invited to submit a drawing, depicting how they stay healthy in one of the following categories: preventive health, including hand washing and flu shots; mental health, such as reading books and playing board games; nutrition; and physical activities. Entries must be on 8.5-by-11-inch white paper and may be done in crayon, markers, colored pencils or watercolors.
First place winners in each of four age divisions — 4 and 5, 6 and 7, 8 and 9, and 10 to 12 — will receive $100.

Open house Saturday at Waimea Country School
Waimea Country School will host an admissions open house for junior kindergarten through sixth-grade students and their families from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The community is invited to visit the campus and learn about the school’s fully accredited learning program, from faculty, students and parents.

Foundation accepting online scholarship applications
Hawaii Community Foundation is receiving online applications for more than 170 scholarships, offered to students seeking financial assistance to fund their college or vocational education. Apply by Feb. 22 at hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/scholarships. The foundation distributes $4.5 million in scholarships to students each year, with individuals receiving an average scholarship award of $2,200.
The application takes between 60 and 90 minutes to complete. Required documents to be sent with the application include a full Student Aid Report generated when completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, grade transcript and personal statement. Some scholarships require letters of recommendation or essays. Visit the website for information and requirements of specific scholarships.
Applications being accepted for Native Hawaiian fellowship program
The Mellon-Hawaii Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is accepting applications for the 2013-14 academic year.
The Mellon-Hawaii fellowship program was established in 2008 for Native Hawaiian scholars early in their academic careers and others who are committed to the advancement of knowledge about the Hawaiian natural and cultural environment, Hawaiian history, politics and society. The program is supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Kamehameha Schools, and administered by The Kohala Center.
Applicants accepted as doctoral fellows receive $40,000 in support to complete their dissertations before accepting their first academic posts. Postdoctoral fellows receive $50,000 in support to publish original research. In addition, the program provides fellows with opportunities to prepare presentations of their research; network with community leaders, mentors and previous fellows; and meet academic publishers who may be interested in their work.

Scholarships available for undergraduate study abroad
The American Institute for Foreign Study’s Shakespeare’s Globe Education Theater Program has been selected as a Fulbright Commission Summer Institute through 2015.
College students, with at least two years of undergraduate study remaining, spend three weeks at the Globe Theater in London, where they study with actors, directors and other theater practitioners.
Three Fulbright scholarships, covering the majority of the costs, including airfare, tuition and accommodations, are available.
